WWDC 2017: Major announcements from Apple’s big developer conference

Apple’s WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2017 begun today, starting with a keynote which was packed full of major announcements.

1. macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Apple has announced a new version of the operating system for its computers called macOS High Sierra. It promises to be faster and safer and is said to use lesser space. Additionally, the Photos app is getting refreshed while Safari’s JavaScript performance will be 80 percent faster. The company also announced a new version of Metal, it’s graphics technology, called Metal 2. Lastly, the Mail app, meanwhile, will take up 35 percent less space.

2. watchOS 4

Apple announced the watchOS 4, making tremendous improvements to the Siri-based watchface. We now have the kaleidoscope watchface and new character faces to join the Mickey and Minnie Mouse options. There have also been improvements to the activity app. Users can now easily control music, with intelligent playlists based on their workout and native Bluetooth support.

3. iOS 11

One of the biggest announcements of WWDC 2017 was iOS 11. Firstly, Siri has been improved. It can speak in another language for you such as English to Chinese, French, German, Italian, or Spanish. Siri is also learning to predict what you might want to do next and offering suggestions. Thanks to the new update, your photos and videos will also now take up less space. And, Apple Music has been improved, which will allow you to see what your friends are listening to. With Files, you can easily browse, search and organise all your files in one place. And there’s a dedicated place for your recent files. Not just the ones on your iPad, but also those in apps, on your other iOS devices, in iCloud Drive and across other services like Box and Dropbox.

4. iPad Pro 2

The new 10.5-inch iPad Pro comes with a screen nearly 20 per cent larger than the 9.7-inch model. It also delivers a full-sized onscreen keyboard. The new iPad Pro Retina display now supports a 120Hz refresh rate. In iOS 11, an all-new Dock makes it simple to open recently used apps and files. And when you use Slide Over or Split View, both apps will stay active so you can work with them simultaneously. It is powered by the A10X Fusion chip wth 64-bit. The iPad Pro features the same cameras as iPhone 7. Advanced optical image stabilisation and an ƒ/1.8 aperture along with a 7MP FaceTime HD camera and 12MP camera.

5. iMac

The company updated its iMac line with a new iMac 21.5-inch and iMac Retina 4K 21.5-inch. It now offers more RAM, the latest Intel Kaby Lake 7th gen processors, more storage and two USB Type-C ports.

6. HomePod

Apple finally introduced its ‘smart’ speaker, HomePod. It is powered by Apple’s A8 processor and works with Apple Music. It can wirelessly access over 40 million songs from the music streaming service. Ithas a total of six microphones and will be available in black and white color variants.

7. tvOS

Apple revealed that it’s adding Amazon prime video to its TV app. No more details were shared apart from that.
